PALM LAKE'S FIFTH GRADE CLASS

One fifth grade goal is to provide for students a smooth transition from a self-contained elementary classroom to the departmentalized middle school setting.

Palm Lake fifth graders participate in the Modern Woodmen Civic Contests which include an oration and creative writing essay. To enhance our study of economics, students participate in Biz Kid$ which is management of a retail store located in the Fashion Square Mall for two full days. Social Studies encompasses the D.A.R.E. program and authentic simulations of American history beginning with post civil war activities through present day current events.

Through our study of crime and consequences, students visit the Orange County Correctional Center and the Juvenile Justice Center each year. In science, our study of ecosystems takes us to the nearby Tibet-Butler Preserve where students interact with our backyard wetlands and study pine flatwoods and macro-photography. Mathematic investigations are a high priority for our students. Emphasis is on writing about math, hands-on investigations, and real life problem solving.
