PALM LAKE'S FIRST GRADE CLASS

Our first graders are a unique community of learners. The children discover the joys of stories read, written and shared and cooperatively learn to solve different types of problems. Working as a group is fun and productive and teaches the students how to gather, interpret and use information. Math and literacy skills are applied to real task which connect the children's homes and their classroom.

First grade is a child centered atmosphere which focuses on the needs and interests of the students. There is a large emphasis on learning processes as well as the products.
Children learn to read and write through real and purposeful reading and writing experiences. Our math curriculum allows children to explore mathematics using manipulatives and real world objects. Students are encouraged to explore and discover a variety of ways to solve problems. Learning is meaningful, purposeful and authentic. Skills are taught in the context of real reading, writing, and problem solving. Responsibility for learning and behavior is the center of the child centered curriculum. Our first grade program is innovative and based on sound theory and best educational practices.

We enjoy educational field trips to enhance our curriculum, such as the farm, the theater, and Epcot.
