As many studies have shown,
children of a given age level will not learn the same material at the
same time. In a classroom that provides for active learning, kindergarten
children are given the opportunity to work at their own pace and on their
own level. Ultimately this will allow each child to attain success in
all areas of learning. It is vital that a child's first school experience
be a positive one, with activities that are both challenging and rewarding.
Since kindergarten is often the child's first experience away from home,
the classroom setting must be one that is emotionally secure, supportive,
and planned for independence. It
is essential to nurture each child in social/emotional, physical and cognitive
areas, thus impacting the whole child. The focus is on the process involving
each skill rather than on the skills themselves. Given
a wide variety of multi-level materials and a choice of learning areas,
children are free to explore, experiment, investigate and communicate,
thus stimulating the thinking and learning process. Taking initiative,
assuming responsibility and making choices are at a maximum, enabling
each child to become a unique person and independent thinker. |
